History of Grama Panchayat

Poonjar Grama Panchayat, established in 1969 in the Meenachil taluk of Kottayam district, is a hilly region that has transformed into a major center for rubber cultivation through the efforts of hardworking farmers. Surrounded by areas including Poonjar Thekkekara to the east and Erattupetta Municipality and Thidanad to the west, this village is blessed with scenic beauty rich in hills and mountains. It is on this soil, which bears the history of the Poonjar royal dynasty established by the Pandya king Manavikrama after coming from Madurai and the legends of Sage Agastya, that the famous Madurai Meenakshi Temple and St. Joseph's Church, established in 1300 AD, are situated.
